Celebrate Earth Day

By Shambrekiá Wise

Earth Day is a chance to honor our planet while nurturing our own well-being. For people with multiple sclerosis, it’s also an opportunity to engage in activities that promote physical health, mental clarity, and social connection – all at a comfortable pace. Here are a few ways to celebrate Earth Day that benefit both you and the planet.

Gardening and planting

Tending a garden or planting trees and flowers is a fulfilling way to give back to the earth. Gardening strengthens muscles, improves dexterity, and reduces stress through grounding contact with nature. Planting trees or flowers supports the environment by improving air quality, providing habitats for wildlife, and enhancing natural beauty. For people with MS, gardening can be adapted with raised beds, ergonomic tools, and lightweight pots. Invite friends or family members to join you, turning the task into a bonding experience. Sharing the joy of gardening not only builds relationships but also helps combat isolation, no matter your stage of life.

Outdoor stretching and Tai Chi

Gentle movement such as stretching or Tai Chi in a park can improve flexibility, balance, and mindfulness. These exercises are ideal for those with MS, offering low-impact options that relax muscles and enhance coordination. Practicing outdoors adds the benefit of fresh air and sunlight, which boosts mood and vitamin D levels.

Participating in a community Tai Chi session or simply inviting a neighbor to stretch alongside you adds a social aspect to the activity. It’s an excellent way to connect with others while celebrating Earth Day’s themes of peace and harmony.

Light outdoor cleanup

For those feeling up to it, a light cleanup of your neighborhood or local park can make a big difference. Picking up litter with a tool or organizing a small cleanup group promotes environmental health while keeping you active. Sharing this effort with others fosters a sense of community and when you’ve finished, achievement.

By engaging in these Earth Day activities, you’re not only caring for the planet but also prioritizing your own health and staying socially connected. To top the day off, arrange a friendly BYO-anything for more neighborly interaction. Who knows? Maybe this one simple act can grow into a monthly event. These simple acts of kindness – for yourself and the earth – are a powerful reminder that small changes can have a big effect.
